Meet The Doctors

J. Rand Baggesen, M.D., President: Dr. Baggesen is the founder and Director of the Executive Health Evaluation Program at the CJW Levinson Heart Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Fulfilling a long-term interest in executive wellness, Dr. Baggesen built this program over a period of two years into a business that now manages the medical care of the executives of ten of Richmond's 13 Fortune 1000 companies.

Prior to his career in medicine, Dr. Baggesen was the Vice President of Institutional Investments for Drexel, Burnham, Lambert in Beverly Hills, CA and later, at Craigie Inc. in Richmond, VA. During his tenure at Craigie, Dr. Baggesen was the top producer of institutional revenues accounting individually for nearly 25% of total firm revenues while attending medical school as a full-time student.

A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Baggesen attended the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency in family practice at Chesterfield Family Practice, a VCU/MCV/Chippenham affiliated program. He served as chief resident and is currently an associate professor of clinical medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Baggesen is the current chairman of the Goochland (VA) Free Clinic.

Danny W. Felty, M.D., Physician and Community Liaison: Dr. Felty is a distinguished graduate from the Virginia Military Institute, attended the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency in family practice at Chesterfield Family Practice, a VCU/MCV/Chippenham affiliated program. He currently serves as an attending physician and associate professor of clinical medicine for the residency program at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Felty serves on the advisory board of the Virginia Joint Commission on Technology and Science (JCOTS) committee for electronic health records and is a member of the board of trustees and chairman of the ethics committee of the Richmond Academy of Medicine.

Rakesh K. Jain, M.D., FACC, a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo Medical School, completed an Internal Medicine residency at the Georgetown University Hospital/VAMC where he served as the chief resident. He completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at the Georgetown University Medical Center as well as a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at MCV Hospital in Richmond, VA. He has performed more than 5,000 cardiac catheterizations and more than 2,500 coronary angioplasties and stenting procedures.

Neal H. Carl, M.D., a graduate of the University of North Carolina, attended the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency in family practice at Chesterfield Family Practice, a VCU/MCV/Chippenham affiliated program. He currently serves as an attending physician and associate professor of clinical medicine for the residency program at the Medical College of Virginia.

James Khatcheressian, M.D., Consulting Cancer Specialist: Dr. Khatcheressian is a breast cancer specialist and health services researcher at the VCU/Massey Cancer Center in Richmond, Virginia. He completed his fellowship training at VCU and was recruited to join the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is currently Director of Quality Improvement for the Massey Cancer Center Oncology Clinics.

Dr Khatcheressian's research interests included the development of novel ways to improve the delivery of care to breast cancer patients and survivors. He authored the definitive review of supportive care strategies for breast cancer patients in Oncology and is lead author for the American Society of Clinical Oncology's practice guidelines for breast cancer follow-up – the definitive national practice guideline source for U.S. oncologists.

Currently, Dr. Khatcheressian is involved with a grant through the National Library of Medicine to develop a patient-oriented website to provide full information about prognosis and treatment options for people with incurable cancer to aid in their decision-making. He is adapting this technology for an upcoming grant that will evaluate the effectiveness of patient-accessible websites that provide information on important breast cancer supportive care and survivorship issues that will foster patient-directed shared decision-making.
